Online Hackers Bring Down Bitcoin.org
One of the most popular websites about the biggest cryptocurrency in the world – bitcoin.org – was recently hacked by an unknown group of hackers. The website was taken down and replaced by another site that offered all users to double their BTC deposits if they were to transfer their coins to a certain wallet.
Matt Corallo, the developer of the bitcoin.org website, warned his clients about the scam and asked them to not trust such messages regardless of who sends them. After a couple of hours of chaos, the website was completely shut down by Corallo and his team. The development team said that the site may not be available for at least a couple of days as they try to not only restore the website but also double-check their security.
As of time of writing, it was reported that at least $17,000 in BTC were transferred to the address used by scammers.
@CobraBitcoin speculated that the issue was in the DNS and also stated that cloud resources of the company were not affected by the attack.
Note that this is not the first time when Bitcoin.org is targeted by scammers. A severe DDoS attack was unleashed by unknown hackers in July, 2021. The website was in a center of controversies before as it changed many owners since Nakamoto left the development of Bitcoin.
